‘BE engaged’ is a project-based programme for Down Syndrome young people to engage in the community through voluntary work. Youth workers from Aġenzija Żgħażagħ run a combination of workshops and multi-sensory tasks to encourage the youth to identify their strengths and talents, and consequently explore how they can be active citizens within the community.

The programme consists of formation sessions, followed by applied practices in the community. Initially, the young people join life skills sessions to get to know each other, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and work in teams, among others. These sessions offer the opportunity for youth to reflect on their potential.

The second part of the project consolidates the skills acquired during the formation sessions by engaging the young people in voluntary work activities with other volunteers in different organisations. The voluntary work activities expose the BE group youth to different realities encountered in organisations, also enabling them to contribute to the wider society while interacting with other young people. After each voluntary work practice, the young people meet at Aġenzija Żgħażagħ to evaluate and process the activity.
