detached youth work in birzebbugia

Biżebbuġia Parish Church Square, landmarks the activism of detached youth work service: Detached youth work operates without the use of a building or activity and takes place where young people “are at” both geographically and developmentally. It delivers informal and social education and addresses whatever needs are presented to or perceived by the youth worker.

Frederick, Laura and Shaun, kick off this service virtually by inviting young people in the area to get in touch with them and engage in different conversation in B’bugia’s characteristic streets.

.

Summer days in B’bugia are quite known to be jam packed, not just by young residents but even by young people who cross over from other localities; and there’s no wonder why this happens! Not only do the young people get to enjoy the summer vibe close to the beach but there are a couple of safe spaces that they can easily meet their friends at and more over be active. One can note that many young people are enthusiastic to try out or even perform their abilities at the skate park. An interesting free show to the passers-by, and a motivation to other skaters who are curious about this sport.

.

None the less, our youth workers still manage to engage quite effectively and have become part of this community; a community which has welcomed the opportunities that detached youth work provides resulting into functioning relationships and activities to be developed. One, cannot go and not realize that even though that due to Covid-19, safety measures had to be adopted the service is still up and running whilst the interest from the young people has grown drastically.

.

Currently the youth workers are working close with the young people in further developing the skate park which is very close at heart to the young people. Their motivation thrives into setting up a meeting for discussion with the concerned to address infrastructural challenges. This opportunity will not just allow the necessary changes to take place but it will allow the young people involved to embark on a learning journey which will grant them with the possibility to explore and acquire skills which they might have not had the opportunity yet to develop.   It is very encouraging to see young people taking care of their second home and putting in their energy, an example of active citizenship.

.

Be it a lengthy conversation about the history of skateboarding, the provision of information about current AZ services and the creation of future activities and initiatives, through these encounters we try to be present and available for young people and come closer to the their aspirations as well as anxieties.

In the coming months, in Birżebbuġia youth workers will continue to provide the detached service every Tuesday and Friday between 6 and 9 pm.
