Science Says Animals are Good for Your Mental Health

During the past month, Agenzija Zghazagh hosted a mental health campaign ( Trust yourself to talk )  addressing ‘anxiety’. A mental health issue which comes with many different faces and affects many in different ways. Agenzija Zghazagh has taken up this initiative following the increase in number of young people suffering from anxiety and asking for reliable information on how to deal with the matter.

Agenzija Zghazagh has taken up this initiative following the increase in number of young people suffering from anxiety and asking for reliable information on how to deal with the matter.

The campaign resulted in positive outcomes, having more young people in trusting themselves to talk and seek support rather than convincing themselves that this shall be over too.

Youth.Inc, an empowerment programme, run by Agenzija Zghazagh adopted this campaign and introduced various methods to the it’s young participants on how to deal with anxiety; ways which will enable us to perform and feel better. In order to support the presented alternatives, the youth were exposed and presented with a first-hand experience at the ‘Dreams of Horses’ Farm in Gozo, specifically chosen by the young people themselves.

Scientists are now digging up evidence that animals can also help improve mental health, even for people with challenging disorders. Though the studies are small, the benefits are impressive enough that clinical settings are opening their doors to animal-assisted interventions–pet therapy.

Many young people claimed that crossing over to Gozo was one worthy experience; for some this was a first. The activity at the ‘Dreams of Horses’, complimented the life skills session which is one of the Youth.Inc’s highlight i.e. that is enabling young people to grow in being independent and attain the day to day skills.
