Aġenzija Żgħażagħ teams up with the Ministry for Sustainable Development to facilitate young people’s participation during the European Week for Sustainable Development 2020

 

Events with young people opened and closed the European Week for Sustainable Development which was organised by the Ministry for Sustainable Development with the collaboration of Agenzija Zghazagh. These events were key to involving young people in the design of strategies leading towards the vision 2050.

A conference held on Saturday, 26th September to kick start the discussion, bringing together young people and policy makers.

The conference was opened with an address from Hon. Carmelo Abela, Minister responsible for Sustainable Development, Social Dialogue and Implementation of the Electoral Manifesto and Hon. Clifton Grima Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations.

During this conference young people were involved in workshops with youth workers from Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and the National Youth Council SDG Ambassadors to discuss issues around Education and Sustainable Development, Future Sustainable Jobs and Social Sustainability to promote Wellbeing.

The outcome of these workshops was presented to the floor in a final plenary.

Young people had the occasion to present their proposals to Members of Parliament in an event held a week later in a live streaming from Castille. MPs Hon. Carmelo Abela, Hon. Clifton Grima, Hon. Clayton Bartolo were joined by Hon. Ivan Bartolo and Hon. Clyde Puli from the opposition to listen to and discuss young people’s proposals, who connected live with Castille through Zoom.

The National Youth Council SDG Ambassadors worked together with workshop participants to prepare the proposals which were discussed during this event.

The United Nations Agenda towards 2030 recognises young people as ‘critical agents of change’. Such events encourage young people to take the floor and become agents of change for a more sustainable society through renewed social justice, activate for climate change and peace. This makes young people not only beneficiaries of the country’s vision for sustainable development towards 2050, but social partners called to actively contribute through strategic proposals for the way ahead.

Agenzija Zghazagh keeps committed to facilitating spaces where policy makers can listen to the voice of young people.
